Choosing the right degree program is not always easy for everyone. While some have long since identified the program they want to pursue at university, others have no idea what field they would like to pursue.

So here are 5 tips to help you make a more informed choice:

1. Get to know yourself and define your preferences

The course you choose should ideally reflect who you are, and you are more likely to succeed in your studies if they interest and motivate you. Think about the types of activities you participate in in your daily life, the courses that have most captured your attention during your school career, or your strengths and weaknesses in different subjects.

You can also ask those around you to describe you in a few words. This will help you discover the character traits and skills that set you apart. Your family, friends and colleagues who know you well may see in you a promising spark that you never suspected!

Not sure where to go? Our Cursus test was created to help you determine which study programs match your interests. In the form of a quiz, the Cursus test is quick and reliable. Take a look!

Tip: Ask yourself, “If I had to spend my life researching one question, what would it be?” Then, make a list of fields of study that might be related to that question. This might help you discover the right program for you!

2. Consult external tools

Indecision is completely normal when more than 250 undergraduate programs are offered at UdeM! Designed by the University, the Affiniti platform helps you discover programs compatible with your interests, your profile and your academic background.

3. Compare the chosen study programs

Are you hesitating between two or even three study programs? The program comparator is here to enlighten you! This tool allows you to highlight the similarities and differences between the various programs that interest you. You will be able to compare the course offerings, but also the information relating to admission and the specific features of the programs. The idea is to allow you to make the best possible choice, by having all the cards in hand!

4. Find out about the desired career from professionals

Exchanging with members of the professional community from the field that interests you is important to take the pulse of the career you aspire to. They are often inclined to give their time to share their passion with the next generation, so don’t hesitate to approach them to discover their world on networking platforms like LinkedIn. You can take the opportunity to ask them questions about their usual tasks, their typical days or the qualities required for the job. Ask them about the demand for labor and the outlook for the field. For example, careers in nursing will be in high demand in the coming years, as will those related to the environment and  technology .

In addition to members of the professional community in the field, you can also seek information from advisors who have your success at heart.

5. Have a plan B

Allow yourself to explore fields of study related to those that interest you and that you would not have thought of. For example, the undergraduate doctorate in pharmacy interests you, but you do not know if your R score meets the requirements? Find out about the bachelor’s degree in biopharmaceutical sciences which offers solid training, particularly with regard to medication. Maintaining an open mind throughout your journey may help you discover a new passion!
